Ellis, Rice Head 3-Point Shootout
NEW YORK (AP) _ Former champions Dale Ellis and Glen Rice will lead the competitors for the NBA’s AT&T Shootout during All-Star Weekend, an eight-man field noticeably missing Nick Van Exel and Steve Kerr.
Ellis, the 1989 winner, is the league’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals made with 1,528 during his 15-year career. The Seattle SuperSonics’ swingman also leads the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage this season at .489 (67-for-137).
Rice, the 1995 winner from the Charlotte Hornets, currently is third in the league from 3-point range at .459 (61-for-133).
Joining Ellis and Rice in the shootout will be Dallas’ Hubert Davis, Utah’s Jeff Hornacek, Vancouver’s Sam Mack, Indiana’s Reggie Miller, Washington’s Tracy Murray and New York’s Charlie Ward.
Conspicuously absent will be the Los Angeles Lakers’ Van Exel, the NBA leader this season in 3-point field goals with 85-for-203, and Chicago’s Kerr, the all-time percentage leader in 3-pointers at .471 (550-for-1,167) and the defending shootout champion. Kerr is out with a broken left collarbone.
The winner of the shootout, to be held Feb. 7, on the eve of the All-Star game at Madison Square Garden, will receive $20,000.
