OMAHA, Neb. — A new survey suggests the economy remains strong in nine Midwest and Plains states, but business leaders are concerned about the ongoing trade disputes. SENT: 130 words. SENT: 270 words.

ALLIANT ENERGY-COAL — With construction on a $700 million natural gas plant halfway done, Alliant Energy has shut down one of its largest coal-fired generators. The 49-year-old facility in Wisconsin is the third coal plant that Alliant has shut down since 2015. The Madison-based utility that serves about 960,000 electric customers in Wisconsin and Iowa is working to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent by 2050. SENT: 250 words.


CAMPER EXPLOSION — An Iowa man was severely burned when his camper exploded after he lit a cigarette.

STUDENT KILLED-IOWA — Several hundred runners gathered in the hometown of slain Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts over the weekend to honor her memory with a run.

— DES MOINES HOMICIDE — Police have identified the victim of this weekend’s fatal shooting in Des Moines.



UNDATED — Top Iowa State running back David Montgomery is day-to-day after suffering an upper arm injury late in last weekend’s loss at TCU. Coach Matt Campbell said an MRI and x-rays were negative and that Montgomery was working out with the team on Sunday with what he described as a deep bruise. Campbell said Montgomery’s status for Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State is probable and may depend on how much Montgomery can deal with the pain. By Sports Writer Luke Meredith.
