George Washington 82, Rutgers 59
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Darlene Saar’s game-high 28 points and 14 rebounds led No. 18 George Washington to an 82-59 victory over Rutgers in the finals of the Atlantic 10 women’s tournament Saturday.
Rutgers (17-13) lost its bid for a third straight conference crown.
Debbie Hemery added 21 points for the Colonials (24-5). Alicia Sleerer scored 14 and Janell Williams had 12 for the Lady Knights, who had been on an eight-game winning streak.
George Washington has won eight in a row and 13 of 15.
There were six ties and nine lead changes in the first half with George Washington leading 33-29 at the break.
The Colonials broke open a close contest with an 11-2 run to start the second half to lead 44-31 with 16:22 left. George Washington led 72-52 with 2:05 remaining when Colonials coach Joe McKeown removed Hemery _ the MVP of the tournament _ from the game.
Saar and Hemery were named to the Atlantic 10 all-tournament team. The two seniors were joined by Liz Hanson and Janell Williams from Rutgers, and Amy Facer of St. Joseph’s.
