FBCA baseball team’s semifinal adversary wins Division 3 state title

May 19, 2019

At least Pasadena-First Baptist Christian Academy’s baseball team can say they were eliminated by the eventual state champions.

Northland Christian, the team that ousted the Warriors in the state tournament semifinals Wednesday night, went on to win the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state title the following day with a 3-2 win over Trinity Christian Willow Park.

After pinning 11 runs on Pasadena-First Baptist, the most the Warriors had surrendered since March 8 in losing to public school foe Caldwell High School, Northland Christian saved just enough offense to slip by Trinity Christian.

In a contest that started out so promising for Warrior fans, FBCA jumped out to 2-0 and 4-2 advantages on Northland Christian. A throwing error on a Cade Walker grounder to shortstop snapped a 2-2 tie and a Josh Towe single past the third baseman created the 4-2 lead.

But that third-inning uprising would be FBCA’s last of the 2019 season.

The Cougars, district champions of District 7, hit back-to-back homers in their half of the third to take its first lead of the game, before a messy fourth inning doomed FBCA’s victory hopes.

It will be a pivotal off-season for FBCA’s baseball program because graduation is about to claim four First Team All-State recipients who were members of this year’s club, including four-year player Jake Sweeney, who absorbed the loss Wednesday night.

For the FBCA girls softball team, who also lost in the state semifinals Wednesday, their conqueror wasn’t as fortunate the next day.

The Woodlands Christian, a 5-0 winner over the Lady Warriors, was roughed up by Waco Reicher Catholic School 10-2 to claim that Division 3 state title.

After the semifinal game, FBCA head coach Jody Clark predicted that Reicher would win the state championship and he was right.

Unlike the baseball team, the softball squad won’t be hit quite as bad by graduation. But the program will be losing their household name in the pitching circle, Ali Dutton.
