University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer to speak about freedom of speech on college campuses: Watch live at the City Club

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer, who led a charge for free speech policy on college campuses, will speak Wednesday at the City Club of Cleveland.

The University of Chicago is known for the “Chicago Statement,” issued in 2015. The policy boils down to the stance that the university’s duty is to protect free speech, even offensive free speech, and facilitate debate.

Other universities adopted the policies -- 35 at last count.

The school’s stance became particularly controversial after a faculty member invited Steve Bannon to speak on campus. There were protests on campus against inviting the former editor of chief of Breitbart and White House chief strategist to President Donald Trump, who many view as being tied to white nationalism.

The university stood by the faculty member who wanted to bring Bannon to campus.

“It is for the individual members of the University community, not for the University as an institution, to make those judgments for themselves, and to act on those judgments not by seeking to suppress speech, but by openly and vigorously contesting the ideas that they oppose,” reads the Chicago Statement.

Zimmer will discuss his ideas about free speech on campuses at 12:30 p.m. Watch live in the video player above.
