Weight Throw Record Set at NYC Meet

NEW YORK (AP) _ Manhattan College’s Jacob Freeman set a meet record in the weight throw with a toss of 71 feet, 5 1/4 inches on Friday in the championship division of the New York Road Runners Club Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track Center.

Freeman, a junior, easily topped the previous mark of 63-11, set last year by Princeton’s Joshua McCaughey.

``I wasn’t throwing as well as I would have liked, but I did manage to get a real good one,″ Freeman said.

McCaughey, a sophomore, finished second Friday with a throw of 69-6 1/4 _ far better than his throw last year.

Maryland’s Ruth Kura won the women’s 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 66-9 1/4. South Carolina’s Dawn Ellerbee, a 2000 Olympian, won the open division with a throw of 72-10 1/2.

Stanford, with Curt Goehring, Don Sage, Seth Hejny and Grant Robinson, won the men’s championship division medley relay in 9:45.56. Georgetown’s Heather Blackard, Jill Laurendeau, Tyrona Heath and Monica Hargrove combined to win the women’s distance medley relay in 11:14.09.

Jason Gatlin, a sophomore at Tennessee and the NCAA outdoor 100- and 200-meter champion last year, won the 200 trials in 20.84 seconds. Louisiana State’s Nuna Lee won the women’s division in 23.39.

St. Francis, Pa., and Brown each won a pair of events in the University Division. Kevin Doyle won the men’s 3,000-meters in 8:13.15, while Tom Carey took the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 60-10 1/2 for St. Francis. Brown’s men’s distance medley team finished in 9:45.56 to win, and Lauren Contursi cleared 12-3 1/2 in the women’s pole vault.

Ed Keefe of Rutgers cleared 17- 3/4 to win the men’s pole vault, while Albany’s Naron Stewart won the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-9.

James Madison had two winners in the University Division women’s competition. Lauren Burawski won the 3,000 meters in 9:49.03, and the distance medley relay finished in 11:29.35.

In the triple jump, Norfolk State’s Desmond Kapofu won the men’s competition with a distance of 49-8 1/4, while Syracuse’s Sprelle Watkins took the women’s event in 40-10 1/4.

Morgan State’s Jean Cummings leaped 24-1 1/2 to win the men’s long jump, while Hampton’s Lakeema Lewis won the women’s competition at 19-3 1/4.
