Pepperidge Farm recalls cookies because of peanut allergy

December 19, 1996

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Pepperidge Farm is recalling batches of its Old Fashioned Lemon Nut Crunch cookies because they could pose a serious risk to people with peanut allergies.

The cookies may contain peanut butter, due to a manufacturing error. Even a small amount of peanuts or peanut butter can cause a life-threatening reaction in people allergic to the nut.

Norwalk, Conn.-based Pepperidge Farm said no consumers have reported illness. The cookies do list walnuts as an ingredient on the package label, but not peanut butter.

Consumers who are peanut sensitive should not eat any of the cookies bearing the production code PRUP2636, PRUP3506 or any production code beginning with the letters PWO. They may return the cookies to their grocery store for an exchange or refund, or call Pepperidge Farm at 1-800-637-7698.
