WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Huskies roll over Vanderbilt at Mohegan Sun
UNCASVILLE — In basketball sense, it was pure art.
Crystal Dangerfield deked her defender one way and went the opposite, creating enough separation so that she could sink a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer.
It was an emphatic end to an emphatic half, one that saw UConn outscore Vanderbilt by 23.
Like so many of their other victories over the years, Saturday’s was over early. The Huskies put on a show, routing Vanderbilt 80-42 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Huskies (2-0) received help from every part of their lineup. Four starters scored in double-figures, led by Dangerfield’s 19 points.
UConn took all the suspense out of the building early, jumping out to a quick 18-3 lead that had Vanderbilt shaking its head. The Huskies would use another dominant run — this one, 9-0 — to extend their lead to 19 late in the first half.
Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier each had 15 points and Megan Walker scored 14.
The Huskies also received another encouraging effort from Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Displaying the skills that made her one of the nation’s most sought-after recruits, Nelson-Ododa commanded the post at times. She finished with five points and two rebounds in 14 minutes.
UConn will next be in action on Thanksgiving for a matchup against Ole Miss (7 p.m.) at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
