LONDON (AP) — It took 569 points to settle, but Kevin Anderson won a Wimbledon semifinal against John Isner. Anderson won the fifth set 26-24. The match took more than 6 hours and is the second -longest in the history of a tournament that began in 1877. Friday’s contest lasted so long, the day’s second semifinal - between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal didn’t finish.
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor University has settled a federal Title IX lawsuit brought by a former volleyball player who alleged that she was drugged and gang raped by at least four football players in 2012. Terms of Friday’s settlement with the woman were not disclosed. The Waco Tribune-Herald reports it’s the fifth such lawsuit the university has settled. Fifteen former students who say they were sexually assaulted still have ongoing litigation with the nation’s largest Baptist school.
NEW YORK (AP) — The federal judge overseeing the NHL concussion case has denied class-action status for the former players suing the league over head injuries. U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson issued her 46-page order today, the first significant victory for the league in a landmark lawsuit that was filed almost five years ago.
PLANO, Texas (AP) — NFL game officials are getting ready for another season, this time with a revamped catch rule. The three criteria are having control of the ball, getting two feet down or another body part and making a football move. The new rule essentially eliminates the ground as a consideration. The ground played a key role in Dez Bryant’s infamous catch that wasn’t almost four years ago.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chase Utley will retire from baseball at the end of this season to spend more time with his wife and two young sons. Utley announced his decision at a jammed news conference at Dodger Stadium, with several teammates surprising him by crowding into the small, steamy room. The 39-year-old second baseman made his name with the Philadelphia Phillies, earning five All-Star berths. The Phillies traded Utley to the Dodgers in 2015.
