China Allowed to Open Consulate in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ China is being allowed to open its fifth U.S. consulate here, and the United States in return may open its fifth consulate in China, a State Department official said.
A site and opening date for the Chinese consulate have not been fixed, spokeswoman Debbie Cavin said Wednesday.
The United States has no immediate plans to open another consulate in China, she said.
Other Chinese consulates are in San Francisco, Chicago, Houston and New York.
The U.S. and Chinese governments had agreed the next Chinese consulate would be in Honolulu.
But in May 1985 the Chinese sought a change because the Los Angeles area is more important commercially to China, and has significantly more Chinese students, said Cavin.
