Japan’s Jobless Rate Falls Again
TOKYO (AP) _ Japan’s unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent in September from 4.7 percent in August, the government announced Friday. It was the second consecutive month of decline.
The last time the jobless rate fell for two straight months was in February and March of 1996, the Management and Coordination Agency said.
The total number of jobless came to 3.17 Million in September, down 0.1 percent from August.
The unemployment rate had been worsening in recent months, increasing pessimism about the nation’s economy, which is struggling to emerge from its worst downturn in 50 years.
Though somewhat off the record high of 4.9 percent last touched in July, the rate is still severe by Japanese standards.
