ATLANTA (AP) _ Braves pitcher Greg Maddux had to leave Thursday’s game against the Detroit Tigers after five innings because of a lingering calf injury.
Maddux, who was hurt in his previous start Saturday, appeared to be bothered by the injury while batting in the third.
In the fifth, he failed to cover first on a grounder by Wendell Magee. Maddux grabbed at his left leg while Julio Franco fielded the ball, then watched as the Atlanta first baseman was beaten to the bag by Magee.
Assistant trainer Jeff Porter came to the mound, but Maddux finished the inning. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom half, leaving a scoreless game after giving up just two hits.
Maddux pitched six-plus innings in his previous start against Boston before leaving because of the strained muscle. He won his fifth straight decision to improve to 7-2.
