BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Brian McCain and Donte Shorts each rushed for two touchdowns as Southern clawed out of an early hole to defeat Mississippi Valley State 44-13 on Saturday.

The Jaguars (8-3, 7-1 Southwest Athletic) end the regular season on a six-game win streak and match Alcorn State and previously unbeaten Grambling at 7-1 in conference. Southern meets Grambling in a West Division playoff Nov. 29 in New Orleans.

Southern rallied from 13-0 down with five scores in the second quarter, taking a 30-13 lead at the break.

After a 19-yard pass from Austin Howard to Willie Quinn for first-and-goal at the 1, McCain put Southern on the board, then Jaleel Richardson fell on an MVSU (2-9, 1-8) fumble in the end zone starting the 44-point avalanche.

Julian Stafford became the fourth Delta Devil to surpass 1,000 yards receiving in a season, finishing with 1,037. Jerry Rice holds the record with 1,345 yards in 1984.
