ASHEVILLE, N.C.(AP) _ Eric Cuthrell scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds as North Carolina-Greensboro defeated North Carolina-Asheville 65-64 Thursday night.

The Spartans (8-4, 2-0 Big South Conference) led by seven with less than 30 seconds left and had to hold off a determined comeback by the Bulldogs (8-6, 2-2) in the final seconds.

The Bulldogs’ Ralf Melis attempted a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left that Eric Cuthrell was called for goaltending, narrowing the lead to 65-61. Melis then sank a 3-pointer on the Bulldogs’ next possession to cut the lead to 65-64.

The Spartans’ Scott Hartzell was fouled with nine second left, but missed the free throws. However, Cuthrell grabbed the rebound and was fouled with seven seconds left. Cuthrell missed both free throws and teammate Tony Daughtry got the rebound and was fouled with four seconds left.

Daughtry missed both free throws and the Bulldogs got the rebound but were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

The Bulldogs were led by Josh Pittman’s 17 points.
