NEW YORK (AP) _ Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev is welcome at the New York Stock Exchange, and even will be offered a chance to ring the opening or closing bell, a spokesman said Wednesday.

''He would be very welcome here, by the exchange and the American business community,'' said Richard Torrenzano, a senior vice president of the NYSE.

He said Soviet officials have discussed the possibility of a visit with NYSE officials. Gorbachev is said to be interested, but might not be able to fit the visit into his schedule next week, he said. Gorbachev is tentatively scheduled to be here Dec. 6-9.

Torrenzano said that if the Soviet leader visits he would be offered a chance to ring the stock exchange bell, providing he was there for the market's 9:30 a.m. EST opening or the 4 p.m. close.
