Newborn Baby Found in Brooklyn Garbage Chute
NEW YORK (AP) _ A woman was charged with murder after her newborn daughter was found dead at the bottom of a garbage chute at a housing project, police said.
Melodie Cummings, 21, whose address was not known, was charged Tuesday after an autopsy showed the baby died of ″blunt trauma to the head and neck″ soon after she was born, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner.
The infant’s body was discovered Monday at a Brooklyn housing project by housing police responding to a 911 call of a child in a garbage chute, said police spokesman Andrew McInnis.
Police suspect the baby was dropped in the chute just after the mother gave birth Monday, he said. Cummings went to a hospital after the birth and spoke to a social worker, who called police.
