South Whitley man identified as victim of river crash

February 25, 2019

A 36-year-old South Whitley man has been identified as the victim of a crash into the St. Marys River near Rudisill Boulevard and Broadway early Sunday, the Allen County coroner’s office said today.

Brian W. Coburn accidentally drowned in the crash, the coroner’s office said in a statement following an autopsy. His death is the eighth in fatal traffic crashes in the county so far this year.

Just before 3:30 a.m., Fort Wayne police were called to Rudisill and Broadway for a possible car in the river, a statement from city police has said.

The car’s OnStar system had notified emergency crews that the car was either in or alongside the river and was moving toward the Bluffton Road bridge.

Divers from the Fort Wayne Fire Department were able to attach a cable to the car and pulled it from the water. Coburn’s body was found inside the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by city police, the coroner’s office and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
