Lady Rockets are dominating opponents

December 18, 2018

The Judson Lady Rockets are destroying opponents left and right as they continue their march to capture the state basketball title that eluded them last year.

Sophomore Kierra Sanderlin scored a game-high 27 points Friday in leading the Rockets (20-4; 2-0 in 26-6A) to a dominant 85-41 win over the Clemens Lady Buffaloes in the Judson High gym. The win, the Rockets’ 12th in a row, is their fourth straight blowout in games they’ve won by an average of 37 points.

Seniors Corina Carter and Tiffany McGarrity added 18 and 17 points, respectively, as the Rockets continually worked the ball inside to Sanderlin and company. Carter assisted on seven inside buckets while goinb 3-for-8 from behind the three-point line. Judson’s willingness to launch the ball from deep drew the Clemens defense out, opening passing lanes for Sanderlin and McGarrity.

The Rockets defense remained effective throughout the game, no more so than in the third quarter, when Clemens went without a basket until the 1:38 mark. The Rockets forced turnovers on six of Clemens’ first seven possessions and made the Buffs pay on the other end, converting four fast-breaks.

The Rockets led 65-31 after three quarters, outscoring Clemens by at least 10 in each stanza.

Judson coach Triva Corrales said that while the three-ball wasn’t dropping the way she would have liked, hitting 9 of 26, they accomplished some goals they set coming into the game.

“We really just wanted to work on our rotation defensively. We honestly don’t look ahead on the schedule, but I know what I want to work on with Steele coming up on Tuesday,” Corrales said, ahead of a trip down FM 78 to play the Steele Lady Knights, who are 12-6 and also 2-0 in 26-6A ball.

“Playing team basketball, sharing the ball … you saw a lot of great passes. That was by design. We want to be hunters and drive and find the open man, and not be forced into 1-on-3s, we want to stay aggressive with our offense,” Corrales added.

Sanderlin logged a balanced night, despite picking up three fouls before half. She hit three of her five three-point attempts, hauled in five rebounds, two offensively, and three steals.
