Santa Fe motorcyclist dies in U.S. 84 head-on
The Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office on Monday evening was attempting to contact next of kin before releasing the name of a Santa Fe lawyer who died in an early morning motorcycle crash on U.S. 84 north of the U.S. 285 intersection.
Spokesman Randy Sanches said in a statement that the motorcyclist died after colliding head-on with a car about 9 a.m. Sanches said the Honda two-door vehicle was southbound when it crossed the center line for an unknown reason.
The Honda driver sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe for emergency surgery, the news release said. Investigators also withheld the driver’s name.
The incident led authorities to close both lanes of the highway north of the Rio Chama Chevron gas station for about two hours.
Drugs and alcohol have not been ruled out as factors in the crash, according to the release.
Members of the Abiquiú and Agua Sana volunteer fire departments assisted with traffic control, Sanches wrote.
