Lady Dust Devils win, earn play-in spot
MOHAVE VALLEY — The Lady Dust Devils outlasted the host Lady Bulldogs 4-3, overtime, at Kingman High School on Tuesday night.
The No. 21-ranked 3-7-1 overall, 2-3-1 in conference and 2-3-1 in region River Valley High School squad’s Arizona Interscholastic Association 3A Northwest Region’s win against the No. 38-ranked 1-10 overall, 1-7 in conference and 0-5 in region Bulldogs earns the Dust Devils a spot in the postseason.
The Dust Devils will play at 6 p.m. today at Pusch Ridge Academy against the No. 12-ranked host Lady Lions in the 2019 AIA 3A Girls Winter Soccer Conference Play-In Tournament.
“We are very proud of them,” Dust Devils head coach Ed Marquez said.
Freshman forward Brisa Muniz scored unassisted in the first half, and the two teams went into the intermission tied at 1-1.
Then sophomore forward Hailie Pagett scored off a penalty kick in the second half, as did senior forward Amy Cervantes off another PK.
Then Kingman answered with two goals of its own, forcing OT.
In the first 10 minutes of OT, sophomore forward Sarahi Gingrich scored off a corner kick from Pagett.
“Kingman played a very physical game, but the girls played through it to the end,” Marquez said. “Sarahi played an amazing game on the wing, her ball control and determination shined through last night.”
Junior Alexis Zavala started at striker against the Bulldogs. “She did really good being that her normal position is defense and in the second half she did a great job of holding their attack at bay,” Marquez said.
