New program offers direct payments to producers
NORFOLK - A new program offered through the USDA provides direct payments to producers that have been impacted by recent trade tariffs.
Production and Compliance Programs Chief Cathy Anderson tells News Talk WJAG the Market Facilitation Program was first announced by USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, and it’s applicable to producers of corn, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, hogs, and dairy.
“The first payment will be issued on 50-percent of the total 2018 production times the payment that’s been established. Each application reflects a producer’s share of production nationwide. It’s not a farm by farm application, it’s just one application for producers reflecting their entire share” Anderson said.
She says producers of corn, sorghum, and soybeans will need to complete harvest before total 2018 production figures are known.
Anderson says the application is available until January 15, 2019, and you can find more information online at Farmers.Gov.
