West Ham signs France midfielder Payet from Marseille
LONDON (AP) — West Ham has signed France midfielder Dimitri Payet for a fee of more than 10 million pounds ($15.7 million) after Marseille reluctantly accepted an offer from the English club.
West Ham says Friday that Payet has signed a five-year contract, with an option for additional season, for an “undisclosed eight-figure fee.”
The 28-year-old Payet is West Ham manager Slaven Bilic’s first major signing since he took over from Sam Allardyce this offseason.
Marseille said Thursday that the club was forced to accept the bid after the player’s agent asked for a “colossal revaluation” of his contract.
Payet, who had more assists (17) than any other player in the French league last season, says “I like attacking football and that they’re counting on me to help achieve that gives me a sense of responsibility.”
