North East ISD names interim to replace retiring superintendent

North East Independent School District’s board of trustees has appointed an interim superintendent to replace Brian Gottardy, who is retiring in May.

Sean Maika, the district’s assistant superintendent of Instruction and Campus Administration, will officially become the interim superintendent in May, NEISD announced Monday.

Maika was previously the district’s executive director for school administration and principal of Harris Middle School. He has worked in public education for 24 years, NEISD said.

Gottardy, 56, announced last month that he plans to retire after eight years as superintendent.

Board President Shannon Grona said in a statement that the decision to appoint Maika came after the board met three times to consider its options.

“That included the possibility of conducting a nationwide search, which can be a costly process, or appointing someone the Board felt to be a potentially qualified candidate as an interim superintendent,” Grona said. “After meeting with Dr. Maika, we feel that he understands the District’s Tradition of Excellence very well and is the best person to continue and improve upon that tradition.”
