Lake City Council honors school athletic director, students

February 13, 2019

LAKE CITY, S.C. – Lake City High School athletic director Matt Apicella and students from the school were recognized at a Lake City City Council meeting Tuesday for their service to the community.

Lake City Administrator Stephany Snowden said the athletes at Lake City High School work on special projects every year and make things in the city a lot better.

“They contribute about a hundred-plus hours of volunteer hours in various capacities,” Snowden said. “The city works with them on the city-wide cleanup and they actually take the initiative.”

About two weeks ago, student-athletes cleaned the area around the school and surrounding neighborhood.

Mayor Pro Tem Billy Brown Jr. presented Apicella and students with a proclamation for their community service efforts at Tuesday’s meeting. The proclamation states that the council honors the hard work, community commitment and innovation of Apicella and the student-athletes at Lake City High School.

“We appreciate the recognition,” Apicella said at the meeting. “We started this program about six years ago. The high school athletic department has done over 10,000 hours of community service. That’s just a testament to the type of kids we have in Lake City.”

Apicella said he is a firm believer in the mission of the Lake City community and especially the mission of Lake City High School.

“Our kids need opportunity and direction,” he said. “We have great kids. When we give them the opportunity to shine, they shine.”

In other business, the council approved ordinances Tuesday evening for two law enforcement assistance and support agreements. On final reading, the council approved an ordinance to enter into a law enforcement assistance and support agreement with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. And on first reading, the council approved the same type of agreement with the Timmonsville Police Department.

The council also:

>> Approved a resolution to award the contract for retention pond fencing at Blanding Street Park.

>> Approved a resolution approving a four-month temporary professional services agreement between Lake City and SAFEbuilt, Carolinas LLC.
