ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) _ Ted Turner is on the mend following surgery to correct a herniated disc in his back.
Turner was in good condition after Wednesday evening’s hourlong operation at Rochester General Hospital. He was expected to be discharged Friday.
Turner elected to have the surgery, called a laminectomy, performed in Rochester because he is friends with the surgeon, Paul Maurer, said a hospital spokesman.
Turner, who founded the Cable News Network, sold his media empire to Time Warner Inc. in 1996.
With an estimated net worth of $5 billion, he was 22nd on Forbes magazine’s list of richest Americans published last month. A year ago, Turner promised a $1 billion gift to the United Nations. He announced Tuesday that the first $55 million of the gift had been awarded.
