Report: Macy, Harrod’s, Nordstrom in Talks To Join Mall
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) _ Macy & Co., Harrod’s of London and Nordstrom Inc. are in talks with Walt Disney Development Co. about joining an upscale Florida mall, according to a published report Sunday.
Peter S. Rummell, president of Disney Development Co., said the shopping center, tentatively called The Disney Town Center, would occupy 1 million to 1.5 million square feet in Osceola County in central Florida.
Disney Development is Disney’s real estate development subsidiary.
Rummell said he could not elaborate on Disney’s talks, but The Orlando Sentinel reported that the three department store chains were involved in negotiations.
Macy and Nordstrom spokesmen last week denied that the companies were talking with Disney.
Harrod’s acknowledged Dec. 1 that the London department store seeks a long- term relationship with Disney, though officials stopped short of confirming negotiations with Disney Development about the mall.
Nordstrom has 60 stores, primarily on the West Coast, but the chain plans to build 15 stores in the Midwest and on the East Coast, according to company officials.
The Harrod’s link with Disney formally begins Jan. 5, when it will open its first store in the United States at a Disney-managed property, the Queen Mary ocean liner, an attraction in Long Beach, Calif.
Harrod’s of London is a 25-acre store is famous for its brand-name products. Michael Cole, media director for the House of Fraser PLC, Harrod’s parent company, said the company hopes the Queen Mary Harrod’s signals ″the beginning of a major collaboration″ with Disney.
