Man pleads not guilty to manslaughter in 2017 shooting
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine man who police say shot and killed a man outside of his West Gardiner house in 2017 has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter as part of plea deal.
The Kennebec Journal reports that 28-year-old Derrick Dupont of Whitefield entered his plea late last month. He’s accused of shooting 41-year-old James Haskell of Chelsea. A state prosecutor has confirmed that a murder charge will be dismissed. Dupont’s sentence had not yet been determined.
Dupont was scheduled to go on trial on murder and manslaughter charges next week. Haskell was shot and killed outside of Dupont’s home on June 17, 2017.
A judge will set Dupont’s sentence on May 6.
