10-year-old dies, 3 hurt in Adams van-semi crash

February 7, 2019

A 10-year-old girl died and three people were injured in a crash involving a van and semi near Monroe in Adams County Thursday morning.

Foggy conditions contributed to the crash on Indiana 124 near County Road 200 East. Police were called just before 7:30 a.m.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Department said Jerry W. Augler was driving a semi west on Indiana 124 and Elizabeth A. Poling was driving a multi-passenger van east when she tried to turn north into a private drive.

Because of the fog, the two vehicles collided and ended up in a ditch on the north side of Indiana 124, police said.

An obituary from Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home said Susan E. Schwartz, 10, of Decatur, died in the crash.

Three other people in the van were taken to Adams Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries.

The passengers in the back seat of the van were not wearing seat belts, police said. The sheriff’s department said if the passengers were wearing seat belts, their injuries could have been less severe.

The crash is under investigation.
