Copter Crashes in Gulf of Mexico
MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) _ A helicopter crashed and sank Saturday after its landing gear caught on the handrail of an oil rig off the Louisiana coast.
The Coast Guard, Petroleum Helicopters Inc. and two offshore supply vessels searched for the pilot, whose name was withheld until the family could be notified.
The pilot was the only person aboard the Bell 206 L-4 helicopter, according to a statement from PHI. It said the helicopter sank soon after it went into the water at about 7:50 a.m.
The accident occurred at a rig about 70 miles south of Morgan City.
PHI said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified.
