Senators Demote Teen-Age Center

October 2, 2001

OTTAWA (AP) _ Center Jason Spezza, the second overall selection in this year’s NHL draft by the Ottawa Senators, was sent back to the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires on Tuesday.

Ottawa acquired the No. 2 selection on draft day when it sent disgruntled forward Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders. The Senators also picked up defenseman Zdeno Chara and forward Bill Muckalt.

Spezza, 18, appeared in all eight of Ottawa’s exhibition games. He registered one goal and one assist, both against Toronto. Last season, he had 43 goals and 73 assists in 56 games with Windsor and the Mississauga IceDogs.

The Senators open their season in Toronto on Wednesday.
