Conran, Allan share Australian PGA lead
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Australia’s Steven Conran, overcoming wild iron play with a brilliant putting performance, shot a 5-under-par 67 today for a share of the second-round lead in the Australian PGA.
``My playing partner, Paul Moloney, told me I had 23 putts. I wasn’t keeping count, so obviously I impressed him,″ said Conran, who matched countryman Stephen Allan at 4-under 140 on the New South Wales course.
``I knew warming up that I might struggle with my swing, and I did. Those are the days you normally shoot 5-over not 5-under. It’s hard to explain.″
Allan, who shared the first-round lead with Stuart Appleby, shot a 71.
Australia’s Brett Partridge (67) and Richard Green (69), were a stroke back at 141, and Appleby (73) and fellow Australian Ashley Andrews (69) followed at 142. Australia’s Robert Allenby (70) topped an eight-player group at 143. New Zealand’s Phil Tataurangi, the 1996 winner, had a 144 total.
