Twins Designate Pitcher Carrasco

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ The Minnesota Twins designated pitcher Hector Carrasco for release or assignment Monday and selected the contract of catcher Javier Valentin.

The Twins also said that infielder Jason Maxwell has elected free agency and infielder Casey Blake was claimed on outright waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Carrasco, 31, was 4-3 with a 4.64 ERA with one save, allowing 77 hits with 30 walks and 70 strikeouts in 56 games for the Twins in 2001.

Valentin, 26, batted .281 with 71 RBIs in 121 games for Edmonton in the Pacific Coast League. He was the Twins’ third-round pick in the 1993 free agent draft.

Maxwell, 29, batted .191 with four doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs in 39 games this season for the Twins. Meanwhile, Blake, 28, batted .191 with one double, one homer and four RBIs in 19 games with the Twins and Baltimore. He was claimed on waivers by the Orioles on Sept. 21.
