Woman Charged With Killing Her Baby
FIGSBORO, Va. (AP) _ A woman accused of fracturing her newborn daughter’s skull last fall stabbed the infant to death on Mother’s Day, police said.
Sharon Denise Alley, 29, was charged with first-degree murder and jailed on $1 million bail. She was accused of stabbing 8-month-old Brooke Alley in the chest with a kitchen knife Sunday.
Ms. Alley had been charged with child abuse in October for allegedly throwing her daughter to the floor and fracturing her skull, sheriff’s Lt. Kimmy Nester said. The mother was scheduled to appear in court next month.
Ms. Alley and the baby were living at her parents’ home, and her parents were in church when the stabbing occurred, Nester said.
Citing confidentiality requirements, Joyce Martin, Henry County social services director, would not comment on why the baby remained in Ms. Alley’s care.
Ms. Alley’s attorney, Kimball Reynolds, said Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Susan Deatherage had awarded custody to the baby’s father after the child was injured last October but recently allowed the infant and her 9-year-old brother returned to Ms. Alley’s custody.
The judge could not be reached immediately for comment.
