Padres Put Hernandez on DL
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Catcher Calos Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday by the San Diego Padres, who also recalled right-handed reliever Carlos Almanzar from Triple-A Las Vegas while demoting right-hander Carlos Reyes.
The Padres have used the DL a major league-high 19 times, and Hernandez is the fourth player to make a second trip to the list.
Hernandez missed the last four games before the All-Star break, so the move was made retroactive to July 6. He was hitting .254 with two homers and 24 RBIs. Hernandez, who was also was on the DL from April 7-22 with a strained groin, was hitting .254 with two homers and 24 RBIs.
Anticipating that Hernandez would be sidelined, the Padres recalled Ben Davis from Las Vegas on Saturday.
Almanzar rejoins the Padres after recording a 4.50 ERA in four games out of the bullpen at Las Vegas. He was 1-3 with a 5.27 ERA in 37 games in relief for the Padres before being optioned to Vegas on July 1.
Reyes was sent outright to Las Vegas to make room for right-hander Todd Erdos, who was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Reyes was 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in 12 games for the Padres after having his contract purchased from Vegas on June 9.
