“BABY SHARK” MANIA
NEW YORK (AP) — The viral kid music video “Baby Shark” has taken a big bite out of culture around the globe, and there’s more to come for Christmas.
New toys tied to the snappy song sold out in pre-sale on Amazon ahead of the holiday, with third-party sellers jacking prices up to $100 and more. Celebrities have hopped on board with their own versions of the song and dance, complete with all the shark hand gestures. Thousands of people have taken the baby shark challenge, uploading their own mixes and mash-ups, from R&B to Santa Claus.
CHILD DIES IN CRASH INVOLVING TWO SHERIFF’S VEHICLES
VALDEZ, Colo. (AP) — Two sheriff’s vehicles crashed into a car in southern Colorado, killing a deputy, the car’s driver and a year-old baby.
Colorado State Patrol investigators say the Las Animas County deputies were responding to a possible domestic disturbance when they crashed into an oncoming car on Colorado Highway 12 near the small town of Valdez on Wednesday night.
Thirty-seven-year-old Sgt. Matthew Moreno, of Trinidad, died at a hospital, and the two other deputies involved suffered minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the car, 23-year-old Taelor Royal, also of Trinidad, died at the scene, and her passenger, 1-year-old Ezekiel Valdez, died a few hours after the crash.
The two-lane road winds along the Purgatoire (per-gah-TWAHR’) River through ranchland and forest.
PENNSYLVANIA BEAR ATTACK
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Game wardens say a bear attacked a woman outside her home in Pennsylvania and dragged her more than 80 yards.
The attack happened Wednesday in Muncy Creek Township, which is located about 16 miles east of Williamsport.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission says the woman was outside with her dog when the bear attacked.
Game Warden Supervisor Mike Steingraber says the woman was able to free herself and call for help. WNEP-TV reports the woman was hospitalized in critical condition and her dog was also injured.
It is unclear why the bear attacked. Steingraber says it may have been attracted to the home by deer parts left over from a recent hunting trip.
Game wardens are searching for the bear, and multiple bear traps have been set up. When authorities catch the bear, it will be euthanized.
WOMAN JAILED IN DISPUTE OVER MESSY APPLIANCE STORE
CLANTON, Ala. (AP) — An 89-year-old Alabama woman is free after spending what she describes as her first night in jail for failing to clean up her small-town appliance store.
Odean Cleckler and her son have been running the family’s shop since her husband’s death in 2008. It’s surrounded by hundreds of old appliances that the city of Clanton ordered cleaned up.
But both the woman and her son were jailed this week after a court ruled they hadn’t complied. Cleckler was freed on a court order after spending one night behind bars, but son Randy Cleckler remains jailed with a 30-day sentence.
Mayor Billy Joe Driver says he didn’t want the woman put in jail, but adds that nothing has been done at the business.
Cleckler says she’s trying to follow the law and help customers who need appliance parts.
GREEN BAY PACKERS FAN LOSES COURT EFFORT TO WEAR TEAM COLORS ON BEARS’ FIELD
CHICAGO (AP) — A Green Bay Packers fan has lost a court battle to wear green and gold on the sidelines of Soldier Field, home of the rival Chicago Bears.
The Chicago Tribune reports a federal judge yesterday denied a request by Russell Beckman for a temporary restraining order and injunction so he could wear Packers’ attire on the sidelines during pregame warm-ups before the lawsuit he filed last year is decided.
Beckman has Bears season tickets. A team rewards program lets season ticket holders stand on the sideline during pregame warm-ups.
The Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, resident argues the Bears’ rule prohibiting fans from wearing opposing team gear on the sidelines violates his rights to free speech.
The Bears face the Packers on Sunday at Soldier Field.
