Former Georgetown Player Critical

January 23, 1998

EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ Former Georgetown point guard Ed Sheffey was in critical condition Thursday in an El Paso hospital, where he was being treated for injuries suffered in a car accident.

An official at Thomason Hospital wouldn’t discuss the accident or the extent of Sheffey’s injuries except to say Sheffey was in the intensive care unit.

Sheffey recently began attending classes at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, N.M.

The Hoyas’ assist leader last season, Sheffey left Georgetown after being suspended from the team because of legal problems related to a traffic incident last year.

Sheffey pleaded guilty last month to one count of fleeing and eluding, one count of reckless driving and one count of speeding and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to complete drug treatment and driver education programs.

Sheffey was stopped by police in August for allegedly driving 90 mph in a 40 mph zone. He had faced several charges, including possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.
