In other second-round action at the clay-court tournament, No. 2 seed Anne Kremer needed nearly three hours to beat unseeded Sarah Pitkowski 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4, Francesca Schiavone defeated Miriam Oremans 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Cristina Torrens-Valero eliminated Miroslava Vavrinec 6-3, 6-0.

In three first-round matches pushed back a day because of rain: fourth-seeded Angeles Montolio beat Dawn Buth 6-3, 6-3, No. 6 Rita Kuti Kis outlasted Emanuelle Gagliardi 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (4), and Petra Mandula defeated Nuria Llagostera 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
