DAVE CHAPPELLE TO RECEIVE MARK TWAIN AWARD FOR COMEDY
WASHINGTON (AP) — Most people might know Dave Chappelle (shuh-PEHL’) as the man who walked away from his multi-million-dollar TV show because of creative differences. But the Kennedy Center sees him as a comedian whose body of work compares favorably to Mark Twain. And as such, Chappelle has been chosen to receive this year’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The Kennedy Center announced the honor yesterday — and also noted Chappelle is a native of the Washington D.C. area — and honed his craft in the region. The award will be presented on Oct. 29 — and the ceremony will be broadcast in January of next year.
R. KELLY - MICHAEL AVENATTI
CHICAGO (AP) — Another day, another court hearing in the R. Kelly sex abuse case. Today in Chicago, there’s a hearing involving a civil lawsuit filed by one of the women who accuses Kelly in the criminal case he now faces. The criminal case was the subject of the hearing held yesterday — and this time, it was celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti who was the main focus. Avenatti has two clients who accuse R. Kelly of sexual misconduct. But Kelly’s attorneys say there’s a chance Avenatti might end up as a witness in the case. Avenatti has turned over a videotape he says shows Kelly having sex with an underage girl. And Kelly’s legal team says if that tape is used in court, Avenatti would have to vouch for how it came in his possession, making him a potential witness.

“AVATAR” SEQUEL DELAYED BY DISNEY - AGAIN
NEW YORK (AP) — You could say fans of “Avatar” have been holding their breath until they’re blue in the face, waiting for the sequel to James Cameron’s blockbuster movie. That shade of blue will be deeper still, now that Disney says the project will be delayed further. The most recent date on the books was Dec. 18, 2020. But now Disney says “Avatar 2″ won’t be out until Dec. 17, 2021. That in turn will produce a domino effect for the other reboots of the film. The other “Avatar” sequels are now pushed back to 2023, 2025 and 2017.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — As much as people have been talking about “Game of Thrones” and the huge audiences the HBO drama is pulling in, it isn’t the top-rated show in the country. That honor goes to “The Big Bang Theory,” the CBS sitcom that is in the final season of its 12-year run. Nielsen says the most recent edition of Big Bang drew 12.5 million viewers. That compares to the 11.8 million viewers who turned in to Sunday’s edition of “Game of Thrones” — the coffee cup one, as it will probably be remembered. Those numbers flip the script on the results from the week before, when “GOT” topped the ratings list.
KIM KARDASHIAN DOCUMENTARY GREEN-LIGHTED
NEW YORK (AP) — You’ve probably heard a lot about Kim Kardashian West’s efforts to free prisoners she feels have been wrongly accused. Now you will get a chance to see some of those efforts. Oxygen Media has signed off on the production of a two-hour documentary titled “Kim Kardashian: The Justice Project.” No immediate word on when it will be out. Meanwhile, the celebrity entrepreneur has said she is studying to become a lawyer.
ROYAL BABY - THE NAME GAME
LONDON (AP) — What’s in a name? In Britain these days, the question is more like what’s ON a name. And for bet-loving Brits, the answer in this case is: a lot of money. Now that the latest royal baby has arrived, bookmakers say there has been a flood of punters trying to get in on the action by betting on the name Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will give their son. So far, Alexander, James and Arthur are among the favorites. There’s also some talk that the boy will get the name Spencer, since that was the maiden name of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. However, Spencer hasn’t attracted as many wagers as the other front-runners in the name-the-royal-baby sweepstakes.

COLLEGE BRIBERY SCANDAL FIGURE FIRED
BOSTON (AP) — There’s some news about the college admissions scandal — but this time, it doesn’t involve the two actresses accused in the case. A California executive who pleaded guilty to charges in the scam has been fired from his job. Stephen Semprevivo is the third parent to plead guilty in connection with his role in the nationwide scandal. He copped to paying $400,000 in bribes to get his son into Georgetown University. The dad was an executive at a company called Cydcor. And in a statement yesterday, the company says Semprevivo was fired because his behavior doesn’t live up to the company’s standards.
