Heavy Rains Cause Problems In W-B; Holy Redeemer Closed Today

WILKES-BARRE — Holy Redeemer High School dismissed classes early Thursday because of flooding in the basement and will be closed today. Cleanup is underway, and school is expected to resume Monday, Diocese of Scranton spokesman Bill Genello said. The school at 159 S. Pennsylvania Ave. released students around 11:30 a.m. Thursday after heavy rainfall caused localized flooding in the Wyoming Valley. Some water entered the lower level of the school, which contains some classrooms and the cafeteria, Genello said. Police said the school was being evacuated in a non-emergency manner because of street flooding. The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the area, including much of Luzerne County. According to the service, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport had received nearly 1½ inches of rain as of shortly before 11 a.m. The service was predicting another half to three-quarters of an inch to fall throughout the day. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain was expected Thursday night. — STAFF REPORT
