6 Dead From Heavy Rains in Japan
TOKYO (AP) _ Torrential rains caused flooding and mudslides in and around the city of Kochi in western Japan on Friday. Six people were reported killed, including a girl who drowned in a manhole.
Nearly three feet of rain _ 35 inches to be exact _ fell on Kochi between Wednesday evening and Friday night. Three houses were destroyed and more than 2,200 residences were flooded.
Yuta Toyama, 16, drowned after falling into a manhole while wading through floodwaters, police in Kochi said.
Two 87-year-old women and an 83-year-old man also drowned in floodwaters in or near the city, which is 390 miles southwest of Tokyo.
Another woman was found dead after being buried in a mudslide Friday, Kyodo news agency reported. A sixth person also died in the storm, Japan’s national broadcast station NHK reported.
Authorities could not be reached late Friday to confirm the two additional deaths.
