Giant’s Causeway Wins St. James’s
ASCOT, England (AP) _ Giant’s Causeway, runner-up in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas, won the St. James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday, the opening day of the Royal Ascot meet.
The 7-2 favorite, ridden by Michael Kinane, moved in front on the inside as the field turned for home in the mile race.
Giant’s Causeway held off late challenges by 16-1 shots Valentino and Medicean.
``He’d had a couple of hard races so I tried to get him to travel and it proved the wrong tactic,″ Kinane said. ``Fair dues to the horse. He’s made up for it today. He’s a good colt. In the final furlong his stamina stood him in good stead.″
Royal Ascot, a highlight of the British summer social calendar, brings out members of the royal family.
Among those attending Tuesday were Queen Elizabeth II; her 99-year-old-mother, the Queen Mother; Princess Anne; Princess Margaret; Prince Charles; and Prince Edward and his wife Sophie.
