Wildfires in New Mexico this summer forced the Sea Scouts to quickly come up with a Plan B for their annual summer trek, which is usally the grueling Philmont Calvacade, an eight-day hike in the Land of Enchantment’s high country. Instead, Havasu’s Sea Scouts were invited to join the Long Beach Sea Scout Ship Conquest for a cruise to the Channel Islands. After planning for Philmont for 18 months, the scouts’ disappointment was displaced by laughter and fun as they participated in boating, swimming and paddling in the Pacific Ocean. The scouts learned navigation on the ocean, operating at night and sitting anchor watch.
The Sea Scouts will be host a recruiting table at the Lake Havasu High School orientation night on Aug. 1.
