Calif. Gov. Urges Public Service
SACRAMENTO (AP) _ Gov. Gray Davis wants to require community service as a condition of graduation for all students at state colleges and universities.
``One of the ethics of the World War II generation was a sense of obligation to the future, and an appreciation for what they inherited. That is getting away from us,″ Davis said Thursday.
Some campuses already require community service as a condition of graduation.
Davis did not say how long students would be required to serve nor what kind of community service would be involved.
``I think its a good idea because I think a lot of the time at academic institutions we are separated from the community,″ said Natasha Clark, a social-work major at California State-Sacramento.
