Largest Department Store Pays $290,000 Ransom

June 4, 1988

BERLIN (AP) _ West Berlin’s famous KaDeWe department store has paid a $290,000 ransom to a blackmailer who is suspected of planting two bombs in the store, police said.

One of the bombs damaged the store’s sporting goods department last week, while the other failed to go off because of a faulty detonator. No one was injured in the first blast which occurred late at night.

Police said Friday that the blackmailer threatened a series of bomb attacks on the store last month unless he was paid $290,000.

The money was delivered in a paper-wrapped package late Thursday to a rail embankment, police said.

Police launched a large-scale search but the blackmailer escaped with the money.

″KeDeWe,″ owned by the large Hertie retail stores chain, claims to be the biggest department store in Europe. It serves about 70,000 customers daily.
