SENTINEL & ENTERPRISE EDITORIAL: Kavanaugh Deserves an Up-or-down Vote

October 5, 2018

Democrats got what they wanted -- an FBI supplemental background investigation into Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual allegations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh -- and now it’s time to vote.

According to Senate Judiciary Committee members who have seen the FBI report, nothing new has turned up to corroborate Ford’s claims that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her 36 years ago at a house party in Maryland.

This is the seventh FBI background check into Kavanaugh’s past conduct, work history, and character, and the agency hasn’t uncovered a single item that would disqualify the esteemed judge from serving on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Senate Democrats and Republicans must now vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation -- yeah or nay.

End this embarrassing partisan process that has played out before the American public for days, with each new sunrise and sunset giving Democrats and pro-abortion activists more time to drum up outrageous complaints against Kavanaugh and poison the reputation of a decent man, husband, father and jurist.

The Democrats’ game plan all along was to delay the Kavanaugh vote until after the mid-term elections on Nov. 6. They put their ambitions of regaining political power in Congress over and above the interests of the American people. They turned Kavanaugh’s nomination into a reprehensible search-and-destroy mission based on the flimsiest of substance, which came anonymously to California Sen. Dianne Feinstein who sat on it for seven weeks. When Democrats couldn’t disqualify Kavanaugh on technical and legal merits, they went to the gutter and sought to ruin the man with incredible accusations and innuendo. They called him a gang rapist, a sexual predator, a drunk for an alleged incident that took place at a house party when he was in high school. The claim could not be corroborated by a single witness.

Kavanaugh and his family have suffered greatly. So has the Democrats’ main weapon, Mrs. Ford, who has been dragged through the Washington mud with her sincere but unsubstantiated allegations.

There should be no doubt left in the minds of Republican Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The trio has faced unbearable pressure from liberal groups to dismiss Judge Kavanaugh. They’ve been ambushed in elevators and threatened with targeted online campaigns. We say stand tall against these forces bent on convicting a man on no tangible evidence. Judge Kavanaugh has been smeared, plain and simple. All Republican senators must stick up for the principles set forth in the U.S. Constitution and elevate this most worthy applicant for the job.

Everyone knew going in that Democrats wouldn’t be satisfied with any FBI investigation unless it delivered sordid evidence against Kavanaugh. They never wanted to clear his name. They were solidly against President Donald Trump’s pick from the beginning and remain so today. Let them stew in their misguided partisanship. But don’t let them delay this vote any longer.
