Recall watch: Stairmaster machines can accelerate without warning
Core Health and Fitness is recalling about 3,500 StairMaster branded 8G Gauntlet Stepmill machines because steps can accelerate rapidly without input from the user, creating a fall hazard.
The company has received 52 reports of the machines malfunctioning, resulting in a total of 12 minor injuries. The recall involves machines with model numbers 9-5250 and 9-5270. The pulled machines were sold in red, black and red/yellow and consist of a revolving staircase and a backlit LCD console.
The model number is printed on the base of the machine. The date code is in the YYWW format (1816 means year 2018, week 16). The date code range for SKU 9-5250 is from 1734 to 1823. The date code range for SKU 9-5270 is from 1813 to 1816. Stairmaster is printed on both sides of the unit and on the shrouds.
The machines were sold at Core Health and Fitness distributors nationwide from October 2017 through June 2018 for between $7,500 and $9,950.

PetSmart is recalling 23,000 strip lights for reptile cages sold in the United States, as the light’s fluorescent bulb can overheat causing the hood on the light fixture to ignite, posing a fire hazard. PetSmart has received six reports of the hood on the recalled light fixtures catching fire. There is no information on whether any reptiles were harmed in the incidents.
The light fixtures are intended to simulate natural daylight and are supposed to be attached to the top of the reptile’s terrarium. The company is recalling both 20-inch and 30-inch fixtures. The 20-inch fixture has UPC number 73725773305 and the 30-inch fixture has UPC number 73725773306 printed on the packaging.
The lights were sold at PetSmart stores nationwide from March 2017 through July 2018 for about $35 (20 inch) and $40 (30 inch).
