DANBURY — The fire department participated in a ceremony to honor the 411th Civil Affairs Battalion on Sunday before the unit ships out to Africa for a one-year mission.

The Danbury-based battalion is stationed at the Veterans Memorial Armed Forces Reserve Center on Wooster Heights Road under the command of Lt. Colonel Cecil Piazza. It was founded in 1945.

The unit provides civil-military operations support, cultural expertise and humanitarian aid, coordinates reconstruction operations and executes functional specialties like public works, administration and education, according to its Facebook page.

U.S. Army Gen. Robert Cooley was keynote speaker of the Sunday deployment ceremony, and U.S. Army Maj. Thomas Saadi was the master of ceremony.

“The brave men and women of the 411th will ship out to Africa soon, and we at the [Danbury Fire Department] wish them a safe and successful mission,” said fire department spokesperson James Gagliardo.
