Museum program to focus on ice industry
La PORTE — Keeping food cold in our early history was not an easy job. However, La Porte County played an important role in this by being a big producer of ice.
Ice harvesting on the lakes in the county was a large industry.
In conjunction with the display of information about this industry throughout the museum during the month of January through early March, Fern Eddy Schultz, La Porte County (IN) Historian, will be relating information about this industry in a program presentation at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum on Saturday at 1 p.m.
It has been recorded that more ice was shipped from La Porte County than from any other place west of the Hudson River.
Learn about the various companies that were involved in this industry, their locations as well as tools of the trade, methods of harvesting, and more. Members of the La Porte County Historical Society, Inc. will be admitted free. For others, regular admissions will apply.
For information, telephone 324-6767 for details. The museum is located at 2405 Indiana Ave., La Porte on U.S. 35 at the south entrance to La Porte.
