ROME (AP) _ Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander and Boris Becker are the top three seeds in the $825,000 Italian Open men’s tennis championships starting Monday, organizers announced Saturday.
With Yannick Noah as the fourth seed, the clay court tournament will have four of the world’s top 10 players in its 64 -man field.
The Czech-born Lendl is the world’s top-ranked player, and No. 2 Wilander, of Sweden, is the defending champion. Becker, of West Germany, did not play singles in Rome last year.
Henri Leconte of France was a late withdrawal because of an ear infection.
Organizers had held a wild card spot until the last minute for John McEnroe, but the American decided not to return to Rome this year.
American tennis’ new hopeful, Andre Agassi, is seeded ninth.
