Officer who fatally shot man in Southeast Portland ID’d
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Police Bureau has identified the officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man in Southeast Portland Tuesday.
The bureau said Wednesday that officer Gary Doran fired at the man while acting Sgt. David Kemple and officer Nicholas Bianchini both used less lethal force during the incident.
Police say officers were called about a man trying to break into a vehicle and that when confronted by a security officer, the person displayed a weapon described as an ax or a hatchet.
Police say arriving officers deployed multiple rounds of a less lethal weapon before the officer fired at the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the identity of the person killed will be released after the Oregon state medical examiner’s office has completed an autopsy.
Detectives continue to investigate.
